Who sang this song? some of the lyrics enclosed

Post by trailertrashmom » Fri Mar 06, 2015 10:01 pm

This song I have on a cassette a friend gave to me about 25 years ago ...(RIP Dave Rockola still missing you after all these years)... never known who the singer is.... sounds early mid sixties to me.... singer is a real man with an old fashioned country and western voice.... starts off :

"Fields of cotton, snowy white,
where the dew covers dixie in the still of the night....
Where the cruel sun burns down,
from dawns early light,
I'll pick cotton
til the sweet bye and bye...." the chorus goes something like "I don't remember when I never picked this cotton, If there's ever been a time... it's long been forgotton, Cotton got my pappy its going to get me... and so so... fantastic authentic hardcore C+W I hope someone out there knows what the song is called and who sang it. Much appreciated folks..Mike

Hiya,

The song is called Cotton (as you might expect) and it's by Cecil Bowman. It appeared on a Cascade vinyl compilation '20 Great Country Recordings of the 50s & 60s' Vol 2, issued by Ace in 1985 (album no/DROP 1011). Brief liner notes say 'all of the tracks come from the catalogue of Starday and 'D' Records in Texas.' Recording date for Cotton is given as 1959 and the writing credit is shared, very interestingly, between Eddie Noack and someone called W Waller. I hadn't realised Eddie Noack was the writer until I looked, it helps to explain the quality of the song (and, perhaps, the dirt farmer theme? - see eg Eddie Noack's 'Dust On The River').

Here's a link to the album:

Looks like you could even get yourself a copy:

Or catch some other Cecil Bowmans on youtube:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7USOQ1cq8X0 (more agricultural theming...)
And there's a couple of others too.

Cheers, enjoy.

Well done History Man. Your username is duly earned. But tell me; did you already know the song or did you look it up somewhere? And if so, where?

Thanks lo&m,

I knew it before, having bought said Cascade compilation when it came out. Haven't listened to it for ages but knew it word for word having played it to death once upon a time. I was looking into it again, minded to send it to the writer of a history of cotton I am reading at the moment:
http://www.nytimes.com/2015/01/04/books ... .html?_r=0
along with the Dixon Brothers' Weaver's Life:

During the usual search on the internet I came across trailertrashmom's enquiry and felt bound to respond.

Cheers for now

Thanks history man.... my tape too has been played to death...just ordered second hand vinyl LP (only format that it is on) from Amazon. 25+ years I've been looking for the name of artist and track title. Very much appreciated. RIP Dave Rockola . Mike
