We have then: Dandy Nichols, Graham Onions, Paul Simon and a thistle. We are looking for something that links them together, something from this year. Don't think too literally. It may mean actual onions for example. When BBC post the answer, I'll post it here.

On the right track there, SC. The full answer from the BBC news site is ...
The link is publications which this year announced they were ceasing their print editions. The images are Dandy Nicholls (the Dandy), Graham Onions (the Onion national edition), Paul Simon's Me and Julio down by the schoolyard (which mentions Newsweek) and a thistle (the emblem of Encyclopaedia Britannica).

Nobody got the whole answer. They picked the person who got closest for the winner.

I'm not surprised! The Paul Simon link is a bit tenuous to say the least.
