Hosting videos on the site

Postby tim73 » Sat Mar 20, 2010 11:30 am

I just wondered if there was a way of hosting videos on the forum without having to navigate away from the site? People normally do this

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c-DZJo_Xyh8

but it doesn't give you the box hosted directly within the thread. Some other sites use a code like this

[youtube]c-DZJo_Xyh8[/youtube]

but I've tried a few variations and can't get any joy...

[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c-DZJo_Xyh8[/youtube]

Code: Select all
c-DZJo_Xyh8

Just wondered if it is possible to do? Any help much appreciated.

I don't think the forum software used here supports this function. A lot of forum software will allow you to "embed" the video in the message body, but this usually needs an add on to the forum scripts (the forum I have configured in the past is SMF which does support video embedding)

The forum doesn't host the video, it is still on youtube but just streams the video into the message post. This is why you will see an "embed" line of text in most youtube videos along with the "URL"

Maybe put something in the feature request section on here ? It is easy to do depending on which forum software they are using here.

I have just looked at the code for the forum and I think it is using PHPBB.

To enable youtube embedding the following needs to be done.

Cheers P&P. Definately more a desirable thing than an essential thing

I always reckon more folks look if there's a picture link rather than a line of text but maybe that's just me.

A modification is required to the forum in order to embed youtube videos.

I am trying to figure out this mod and when I do I will let you know.

1. Click on "Administration Control Panel" at the very bottom

2. Click on "POSTING" Tab

3. Click on "add a new BBcode"

4. In the "BBCode usage" Box copy and paste:

Code: Select all
[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v={SIMPLETEXT}[/youtube]

5. In the "HTML replacement" Box copy and paste:
Code: Select all
<object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/{SIMPLETEXT}&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/{SIMPLETEXT}&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>

you can change the size if you like:
560 × 340
640 × 385
853 × 505
1280 × 745

6. In the "Help line" Box put: Insert Youtube Video

7. In Settings TICK "Display on posting page"

8. Click "Submit"

Thanks BTD - I assume the change is made by the mods as I don't have access to any Administration Control Panel? The rest i.e. taking a link

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qwSGm1kul8Y

and wrapping it in [youtube] with the "/" in the second youtube is what I normally do

I have to upgrade to phpBB3 which is necessary to embed Youtube.

I have started the upgrade process, but the process has identified that there are loads of duplicated users and it won't transfer them to the new database. It will take me until next Christmas to delete them by hand.

I have asked phpBB for help, via their forum so I will just have to wait and see.

If that fails I will probably be able to write a script that will run through the database and delete the duplicates.

I will keep you up to date.

By way of an update:

I have now found quite an easy way of removing the duplicate usernames.
I have tried this with a duplicate database and upgraded from there.
Things aere going quite well but I'm not quite there.

I expect to stop access to the forum, probably tomorrow, so that I can carry out the 'real' conversion after concluding a successful test.

When I do stop access to the database, trust me - YOU WILL KNOW...

Further update:

I am testing the upgrade from phpBB2 to phpBB3 by using a copy of the forum database.

I seemed to remove the duplicate usernames OK.
I then started to convert the current database to the new database that phpBB3 uses.
You may not believe this, but it is TRUE, I have been running the conversion now for over 36 HOURS and it's still running.
I have no idea of knowing when the conversion will be complete, but when it is I will test the conversion before I go ahead with the 'real' conversion.
Unfortunately, I will have to 'cut off' the forum during the conversion.
I will post a new FRONT page on the forum to say that it has been ctu off for upgrading.

Watch this space...

I have started a new thread specifically for upgrading from phpBB2 to phpBB3.
It is named:

Upgrading forum from phpBB2 to phpBB3

I put a lot of thought into thinking of a title for this thread....
